Automating the data setup, makes it easier for other researchers to reproduce your research. It makes it easier to deploy a pretrained model as part of software package. It makes it easier for you to get your work up and running on a new system yourself.

DataDeps.jl allows software to declare that it depends upon some data files that are hosted on an another server. It is the backend package behind MLDatasets.jl and several other packages. It removes the need to worry about weather or not data has been downloaded correctly, and to the right paths, thus simplifying any setup procedure.
